Get into Geoscience launches for 2024

Today in UCD Get into Geoscience launches for 2024. Run by iCRAG, the SFI Research Centre in Applied Geosciences, Get into Geoscience is a programme which aims to introduce second level students from Transition Year and senior cycle to the geosciences.

Speaking at the launch of Get into Geoscience in UCD, programme coordinator Elspeth Sinclair said: “Today sees the launch of Get into Geoscience for 2024. This year’s programme will see students investigating a geoscience question, and working with iCRAG scientists to carry out a research project of their own interest. We are delighted to be collaborating with ESERO Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and ESA’s Climate Detectives today where students are investigating a local climate problem using real satellite images”

With deep knowledge of the planet and earth system processes, geoscientists are uniquely placed to use their talents and skills to solving the world’s environmental, social, and economic problems.

Following a successful pilot programme in early 2023 featuring two schools, the programme is now recruiting schools to take part in the 2024 Transition Year iteration, beginning in January 2024.

The Transition Year Programme challenges students to solve a real-world geoscience problem in collaboration with real geoscientists.

Previous research projects have focussed on aspects of geothermal energy, including everything from geothermal energy policy in Ireland to the potential for geothermal energy to power Irish schools. This year will see the projects focus on local geoscience issues that have an impact on students’ everyday lives.

Get into Geoscience is closely aligned with various aspects of the junior and leaving certificate curricula including the sciences, geography, maths and social science. With the introduction of the new Climate Action and Sustainability Leaving Certificate subject in 2024, it couldn’t be a better time to get involved in the programme.
